A fashion show themed “Universal Beauty” was staged Sunday in Beijing by the Adaptive Clothing Research Center of Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology and Beijing Municipal Association of Persons with Physical Disability.
The show featured adaptive clothing for people with disabilities, unveiled the first such lineup designed by the research center.
People with physical disabilities face many difficulties in putting on traditional clothing. Since the middle of 2019, the Adaptive Clothing Research Center has developed various adaptive clothing styles, which were rolled out on stage with wheel-chaired models.
Functionality was the highlight of the show. The raincoats are made large to be able to cover the person and the wheelchair, and they have reflective stripes on the back to be more visible to others. The down jackets are designed into L-shapes so that the lower body of people with disabilities can be kept comfortable and warm, and they have special cuffs that are equipped with wear-resistant fabrics. The jackets also have big pockets arranged above the thighs for the hands to keep warm. The sports suits have a breathable design under the armpits, and the hem is short in front and long in the back, making it easier to put on while in a seated position.
Wang Qi, director of the Adaptive Clothing Research Center, said that the center has set up a comprehensive platform for technological research, product development, manufacture, and application of adaptive clothing. It has also established a database on the body shapes of the physically handicapped. The center has designed and developed more than 40 types of adaptive clothing, including sweaters, down jackets, casual pants, suits and dresses. There are also plans to develop new types of underwear in the future.
